History of Guinea

History

Independence

From 1882 to 1958, Guinea was known as French Guinea, because it was a French Colony. In 1958, Guinea voted against the French using their land as a colony. Therefore, it became its own independent country.

First President

Guineas first president was Ahmed Sekou Toure. Toure played an influential part in Guineas strike in 1953. He was also elected to be Guineas deputy to the French National Assembly in Paris. During his presidency, Toure helped Guineas economy by bringing people from outside of Guinea to oversee how their land was used, and to keep it healthy.
